1. What is an elective or placement, and how does it work in the Philippines? An elective or placement is a short-term, immersive learning opportunity designed to give students practical experience in their chosen field. In the Philippines, we collaborate with hospitals, clinics, and institutions to offer supervised, hands-on training in real-world settings.

2. Who is eligible to join Electives Asia’s programs abroad? Our programs are open to students and professionals currently enrolled in or pursuing degrees in medicine, nursing, dentistry, midwifery, biomedical science, and diagnostic radiography.

3. How do I apply for an elective placement? To apply, complete our online contact form with the following details: full name, email address, phone number, school name, chosen program, course, year level, preferred duration, group size (if applicable), desired start date, and any questions you may have. You can also request a call for further discussion.

4. Is there an application fee? No, there is no application fee. However, placements are offered on a first-come, first-served basis. To secure your chosen dates, a £200 non-refundable registration fee is required. This fee must be paid within 7 days after submitting your online registration form. Once you confirm your decision to proceed with your elective, our team will send you the registration form link.

5. When should I apply for an elective? We recommend applying at least 3 to 6 months in advance to secure your preferred placement dates. This also gives you enough time to arrange travel documents and book your flights early — helping you save on airfare.

6. How long can I stay for an elective placement? Elective placements typically last 2 to 4 weeks, though the duration can vary depending on your program and schedule. In some cases, a longer stay may be arranged based on availability and approval.

7. What documents do I need to provide? Please prepare and submit the following documents: •Student profile with details of your clinical experience, signed by your school or bearing the official school seal •Certificate of Student Status, diploma, or school transcript with an official seal •Reference or endorsement letter from your school, signed or sealed officially •Valid passport (must be valid for at least six months prior to your arrival) •Vaccination records •Recent headshot photo (taken within the last 3 months) •Signed waiver by you, your school, and a parent/guardian (template available upon request) •Insurance coverage — Medical, Travel, and Indemnity •Visa (if required, depending on your nationality and duration of stay)

8. Can I travel with my family or partner? Yes, you’re welcome to travel with your family or partner. However, please note that non-elective participants are not eligible for Electives Asia accommodation under our program. That said, our team will gladly offer guidance and local recommendations to help your spouse or family members settle comfortably and make the most of their stay while you complete your elective.

9. Do I get paid? No, our elective programs are unpaid and are intended solely for educational and experiential learning. They offer participants the valuable opportunity to gain hands-on experience in healthcare settings that differ from their home country — particularly within developing communities.

10. Can I do my elective with a group of friends? Absolutely! We welcome group placements and do our best to place friends together — subject to availability. It’s a great way to learn, travel, and experience healthcare abroad as a team. We recommend reaching out early to secure spots for your group.

11. Where will my placement be located? Our elective placements are based in the Philippines, specifically in the provinces of Iloilo and Capiz. These locations offer the same high-quality, hands-on learning experiences enjoyed by our past participants — combining professional growth with rich cultural immersion in some of the country’s most welcoming communities.

12. Is the Philippines safe for international students? Yes, the Philippines is generally safe and welcoming for international students. Locals are known for their warmth and hospitality, and our team ensures that you’re well-supported throughout your stay. We also provide a comprehensive safety and orientation briefing upon arrival, covering local customs and travel tips. As with any international experience, we encourage students to stay aware of their surroundings and follow basic safety precautions for a smooth and enjoyable stay.

13. What are the living costs in the Philippines? The cost of living in the Philippines is very affordable, especially for international students. You can expect to spend around £5–£20 per day on meals, transportation, and personal expenses — depending on your lifestyle. This means you can enjoy a comfortable, enriching stay while experiencing the best of Filipino culture at a great value.

14. What is the local culture like in the Philippines? The Philippines is celebrated for its warm hospitality, friendly locals, and vibrant mix of cultures. English is widely spoken, making communication easy and helping international students feel right at home. 15. Are vaccinations required before traveling? Yes, we highly recommend that students are up to date with key vaccinations before travelling to the Philippines. These include COVID-19, Hepatitis A and B, Typhoid, Dengue, Rabies, and Tetanus, as well as malaria prophylaxis if you plan to visit rural areas. Staying protected ensures a safe, worry-free experience throughout your elective and allows you to fully enjoy your time in the Philippines.

16. Will I need a visa to travel to the Philippines? Visa requirements vary depending on your nationality and length of stay. Citizens of many countries — including the UK, US, EU nations, Australia, and Canada — can enter the Philippines visa-free for up to 30 days. If your elective placement extends beyond this period, you can easily apply for a visa extension at the Bureau of Immigration in the Philippines. We recommend checking with the Philippine Embassy or Consulate in your home country for the latest and most accurate visa information before travelling. This ensures a smooth and hassle-free entry for your elective experience.

17. Where and when should I book my flights? We highly recommend booking your flights early to secure the best rates and ensure availability. Planning ahead also gives you the chance to schedule a weekend or post-elective getaway to explore the Philippines’ stunning destinations. While we’re happy to suggest must-visit places and travel tips, you’re free to plan your own itinerary to suit your interests and schedule. This way, you can make the most of both your elective experience and your time discovering the beauty of the Philippines.

18. Which airport should I fly into when traveling to Iloilo City or Roxas City? For your elective placement in Iloilo City, the nearest airport is Iloilo International Airport (ILO). For Roxas City, Capiz, the closest option is Roxas City Airport (RXS). If direct flights to these airports are not available, you can fly into Ninoy Aquino International Airport (MNL) in Manila or Mactan-Cebu International Airport (CEB) in Cebu, then take a connecting domestic flight. Once your elective is confirmed, our team will provide personalized guidance and support to help you plan your travel efficiently and ensure a smooth arrival.

19. What should I bring with me? For your elective in Iloilo or Capiz, we recommend packing comfortable medical attire such as scrubs and a white coat, along with a stethoscope if needed, personal medications, and essential travel items. 20. Are there scholarships or financial aid options available? Yes! While Electives Asia does not provide its own scholarships, there are several ways international students from the UK, Canada, Australia, and other countries can fund their electives in the Philippines. Many universities offer bursaries or grants specifically for students undertaking international electives, so it’s worth checking with your medical school’s international office or student support services. Students can also explore external scholarships from professional medical associations, charities, or global health organizations. 23. What type of accommodation do you have? We provide safe, comfortable, and conveniently located accommodation options for our students. A secured private house or a condo situated in a secure area within the city, ensuring easy access to hospitals, local amenities, and public transport. 24. What is the food like? Do you offer vegetarian/vegan options or cater to dietary requirements? We provide breakfast and dinner in a casual, family-style setting, featuring a blend of Filipino and international cuisine. 31. What happens if I need to cancel my elective? Our cancellation policy varies based on the notice period, and refunds may be available depending on the circumstances. Please feel free to contact us to discuss the details of our cancellation policy.

32. What kind of clinical experience can I expect? Your experience will depend on your area of study and chosen institution. You may have the opportunity to observe procedures, assist in patient care, join ward rounds, and participate in community health programs.

33. What are the days and hours of the internships? Typical shifts take place only Monday through Friday between the hours of 9 am and 3 pm in a hospital setting, and between 8 am and 12 pm in a rural setting. On the other hand, if you work in a hospital, the length of your shifts can be longer than usual depending on the department to which you are allocated. Every weekend shift is completely voluntary.

34. Can I choose my specialty or department? Yes, we try to accommodate student preferences based on availability. Specialties may include general medicine, surgery, pediatrics, obstetrics and gynecology, emergency medicine, and more.

35. Can I combine the hospital and rural elective programs? Yes. It is always an option for you to mix hospital-based electives with rural-based electives in order to gain experience in a variety of healthcare environments at no additional expense. You need only let us know, and we will see to it that everything is in order for you.

36. Can I go on evening and weekend shifts? Yes. Only if you are at a medical facility; this does not apply in other contexts, especially rural ones. We also urge that you contact the department you be allocated after you have settled in so that you can plan a weekend or night shift schedule during your elective with the medical professional you work with. This will allow you to get the most out of your experience during your elective.

37. Can I extend my placement if I want to stay longer? Extensions may be possible, depending on availability. Let us know as early as possible so we can make arrangements.

38. Will I be supervised during my placement? Yes, all students are supervised by qualified professionals who ensure that your learning experience is safe and beneficial.

39. Will I have access to learning resources during my placement? Yes, most hospitals and clinics provide access to medical libraries, case studies, and discussions with mentors.

40. Can my elective count toward my university credits? It depends on your university’s policies. We can provide documentation and evaluations if required for credit transfer.

41. Can I travel during my elective? Yes! Many students take weekend trips to explore the Philippines’ beautiful beaches, mountains, and cultural sites. We can provide travel advice for safe and enjoyable trips.

42. How much money do I need for weekend travel and tourist activities? The amount you need depends on your destination, activities, and personal preferences. On average, budget travelers spend around £30– £50 per weekend, covering local transport, food, and sightseeing. If you plan to visit popular tourist spots, go island hopping, or stay in resorts, costs can range from £80– £100 or more per weekend. 43. What is the mode of transportation for weekend getaways and tourist activities? Transportation options vary depending on your destination and budget. Common modes of transport include: Public Buses & Vans – Affordable and available for intercity and provincial travel, Taxis & Ride-Sharing (Grab) – Convenient for short-distance trips in cities, Tricycles & Jeepneys – Local and budget-friendly transport within towns, Ferries & Boats – Ideal for island-hopping and coastal destinations, Private Car Rentals & Tour Vans – Great for group travel and more flexible itineraries. 44. Are ATMs and card payments available in tourist destinations? Major cities and tourist spots have ATMs and accept card payments, but some rural areas may only take cash. It’s best to carry enough cash for small expenses.
